Ferroalloy Marketing Department

At university, I was an earth science major. In 2019, after graduating, I joined Nippon Denko in an administrative role, where I was involved in recruiting new graduates and education and training for about two years. In March 2021, I was transferred to the Ferroalloy Marketing Department, where I am in charge of raw materials purchasing. On my days off, I like to watch soccer, play golf, watch movies, or go driving.

Purchasing raw materials from Japan and the rest of the world, supporting consistent production of plants

When I was job hunting, I focused mainly on materials manufacturers that are involved in many fields and have a connection to all industries through the products. What drew me to Nippon Denko was the fact that they worked with multiple products and in multiple industries in a wide range of businesses, namely ferroalloys, functional materials, environment, and electric power.
In my current position in the Ferroalloy Marketing Department, I am in charge of procuring the raw materials used in the production of high-carbon ferromanganese and Low-carbon ferromanganese(SLP), our main products. My main responsibilities involve maintaining stable operations at our Tokushima Plant. Specifically, I purchase raw materials from domestic and foreign suppliers while coordinating with the manufacturing department and raw materials control department at the plant and other internal departments on a daily basis, and manage and coordinate schedules through the delivery of the raw materials to the plant.

Major responsibilities create major fulfillment

Many different raw materials are used in ferroalloy production, and the vast amount of knowledge required is quite a challenge. The source country and market are different for each material, and the job requires knowing about developments and problems happening all around the world in addition to the things you need to know about the materials themselves. I find it challenging but also intriguing because I now have a direct connection to these global events where I had none before. Also the task of raw material purchasing is important because those transactions determine the raw material costs that impact the company’s financial results. The job entails a lot of responsibility, but when I successfully internalize the knowledge and skillfully negotiate prices with a supplier, I feel that I have made a sizeable contribution to the company, which makes the job very fulfilling.

A Typical Day at Work

9:00 Arrive, respond to emails
10:00 Check markets
10:30 Prepare materials
12:00 Lunch
13:00 Meeting with colleagues and suppliers
16:00 Respond to emails, prepare materials
18:30 Leave the office

The company deploys a remote working program, so I either go to the office or work from home, depending on what I have to do that day. When I go to the office, I usually arrive at 9:00. The first things I do are respond to emails that arrived overnight, read trade journals to check up on the raw materials markets, and check other information. Later in the morning, I prepare materials for plant and department-specific meetings and client meetings. I break for lunch at noon. There are countless restaurants near the office, so I like to go out to my favorites with coworkers. After recharging, I head to meetings at the company and offsite, respond to emails, and prepare materials for the upcoming days. I leave the office at around 18:00.
I feel that Nippon Denko gives younger workers a lot of discretion. I would be thrilled to work with you if our company interests you out of the many you will check out during your job hunt.
