Nippon Denko Co., Ltd. (the "Company" or "we") has been conducting “The Technology Development for Decarbonization and Energy Conservation in the Ferromanganese Production Process,” a project selected for the Incubation Research and Development Phase of the “Program to Develop and Promote the Commercialization of Energy Conservation Technologies to Realize a Decarbonized Society,” implemented by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). Based on the results of this research and development, we have successfully passed NEDO’s stage-gate review and are now moving into the practical development phase.

One of our mainstay products, ferroalloy (high-carbon ferromanganese), is manufactured through a reduction process that removes oxygen from naturally occurring manganese ore. The use of coal coke is optimal for this reduction reaction, but CO2 is inevitably generated as a result of this process.
During the 2024–2025 incubation research and development phase, we investigated several core technologies related to reduction reactions as alternatives to coal coke. Considering their feasibility and cost-effectiveness at the current stage, we selected candidate new processes capable of achieving both decarbonization and energy conservation.
In the next step, the 2026–2030 practical development phase, we will utilize the results from the incubation research and development phase to advance technological development, addressing key challenges in implementing the new process. Through this, we aim to achieve both decarbonization and energy conservation in the reduction reaction process of ferroalloy production.
